As part of the ‘Lebendige Alster’ (Living Alster) project organised by BUND and NABU, there has recently been a cooperation with Hamburg University Sports.
Ecologically effective structures, known as gabions, are suspended underneath the university jetty, where small animals, juvenile fish, mussels and aquatic plants can colonise. To be more precise, these are six stainless steel baskets measuring around 1 m³, which are filled with stones, dead wood and natural fibre mats to offer small animals and plants protection and settlement opportunities.
All in all, numerous measures have already been implemented to improve the habitats along the Oberalster with gravel banks, current deflectors, dead wood and sand traps.
We think this is a successful campaign for sustainability and nature conservation.
