BEAT! – active movement breaks in lectures and seminars

BEAT!
Prolonged sitting poses health risks that can be reduced through short, targeted breaks and light exercise. Students spend more time sitting than any other social group, up to 11 hours a day (Moulin et al., 2021).
From summer term 2025 onwards, BEAT! will offer active movement breaks of 5 - 10 minutes for lectures & seminars. Depending on your wishes, we can either come live into the lecture hall/seminar room or join your class via ZOOM.
If you are interested, lecturers are welcome to send an email to BEAT! with information on the desired day, time and whether a movement break in presence or digitally is desired.
Interested students are welcome to forward this offer to their lecturers.
We are convinced that short exercise breaks not only help to improve well-being, but can also increase engagement, social interaction and teaching quality.

Relaxed eyes through eye training (Online lecture)
Working and studying in the digital age puts strain on the visual system and the eyes. Only relaxed eyes and a well-trained visual system ensure a clear view and help to avoid visual disturbances and irritation.
This interactive presentation on 28 April from 11:00 - 12:00 will provide background information and lots of helpful tips on how to keep the visual system healthy and efficient with exercises that can be easily integrated into everyday working life at a computer screen.

BEAT! x AStA: Cookery workshops for students

Hochschulsport & Freepik.com
Eating a vegan and balanced diet in stressful everyday life - how do I get all the nutrients I need? With the right food, we support our body to remain fully functional throughout the day; most of the time, other things are more important to us and we eat unbalanced and at the wrong times. A heavy lunch is often followed by a ‘food coma’, an afternoon slump is followed by a sweet tooth and a forgotten or inadequate lunch is followed by a ravenous appetite attack in the evening.
In this workshop, you will prepare a delicious sustainable bowl using mainly seasonal, regional foods. Whilst enjoying it together, you will learn what the Planetary Health Diet is all about and what it does for your body. You will get tips on shopping and storage as well as quick and easy preparation and cooking, you can discuss your questions and ideas and exchange further tips for healthy, simple snacks.
We look forward to meeting you!
This course is aimed exclusively at UHH students.
This workshop is sponsored by our health partner, Techniker, and will take place on 21 May 2025 at 18:30 in cooperation with the AStA.
Don't want to miss a cookery workshop? Then sign up for our info list. You will be informed as soon as a new workshop takes place.
Biking to university - Here we go again! Are you taking part?

BEAT!
From May to August, the motto is once again “Cycle to university/work”. Join in and cycle as many kilometres as possible to work, to university and around the home office from May to August, either in a team with fellow students and colleagues or on your own.
It's not about top performance, but simply about taking part, contributing to the environment and your own health or simply about team spirit. Last year, 448 UHH employees registered for the campaign and 32 UHH teams took part. Together they cycled 79,224 kilometres and saved 15.591 tons of CO2. Since last year, UHH students have also been able to register via our UHH microsite and form mixed teams with employees. Those who manage to cycle on 20 days during the campaign period can also win attractive prizes.
You are also welcome to visit us on UHH World Bike Day and have your bike checked during the bike fitting
Students and employees of the UHH please register via the UHH/mdRzA microsite: www.mdrza.de/uni-hamburg.
You can find more information about cycling at UHH here.
cycle syncing - in harmony with the cycle

Social Media Overload

BEAT!
We see the beautifully styled and seemingly perfect lives of others on Instagram and TikTok every day. Questioning your own life or identity can happen quickly. We teach strategies to protect against identity crises in order to deal with social media in a healthy way.
This workshop is supported by our health partner Der Techniker.
‘It does something to us too!’ - A lecture for relatives of people with an addiction
Addiction problems not only affect the person with the illness, but often also their close relatives. Partners, parents and children find themselves in the difficult position of having to find their way through the jungle of worries, support, excessive demands and disappointment. Even as a colleague or supervisor, it is not always easy to find the right way to deal with a person suffering from addiction.
On 14 May from 11:00 - 12:30 via Zoom, we want to address the particular challenges that relatives often face and show them ways to deal with the illness of their loved one without losing sight of themselves.
This lecture is primarily aimed at UHH employees. UHH students are also very welcome!
You can register here.

Welcome Calmness – Stress Prevention for Students
When: Wed, 18 June 2025, 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Where: Digital
This lecture explains how the stress hormone cortisol affects the body—contributing to issues like sleep disturbances, headaches, tension, tinnitus, high blood pressure, and more. It discusses why this happens and suggests strategies to counteract these effects. Particularly relevant for students, as managing multiple demands from studies, jobs, and everyday life can increase cortisol levels. The presentation also highlights various levels at which stress can be addressed, including in professional settings. For better understanding, it explains what occurs in the brain and body during stress, promising "aha" moments!

TAG DER GESUNDEN ERNÄHRUNG AM 07.03.2025
Foto: freepik
Listen in - we were guests on the Macromedia University lecture podcast.

We spoke to the two presenters, Prof Dr Annette Strauß and Prof Dr Andreas Hebbel-Seeger, about what makes a health-promoting university for students, what didactic components we believe the topic of health and health-related sport at universities has and what tips we have to make university teaching healthy for everyone involved.
